THE KING OF POP MICHAEL JACKSON DIES

Michael Jackson, the record-breaking, sensationally gifted "King of Pop" who emerged from childhoodsuperstardom to become the entertainment world's most influential singer and dancer, and the tabloid world's most disturbing celebrity, has died.

He was 50.

A person with knowledge of the situation says Jackson died Thursday in a Los Angeles hospital.

The person was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity.

His death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

Michael Jackson, AKA the King of Pop, died Thursday, June 25th after going into cardiac arrest.

Michael was married to nurse Debbie Rowe and had two children, son Prince Michael Joseph Jackson Jr. and daughter Paris Michael Katherine Jackson.

Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary Indiana. He was the seventh of nine children. His musical career began at age five when he became the lead singer of the Jackson 5 in 1964. In 1968 The Jackson 5 signed with Motown Records and moved to California. The group’s first four singles all made US No. 1 hits. They recorded 14 albums with Motown before signing with Epic. With Epic Michael recorded his first solo album, “Off The Wall.” The album became the first album ever to release four No.1 singles in the US.

His musical career continued to grow when he released the world’s largest selling album, “Thriller,” which produced 7 hit singles and sold 50 million copies.

Michael can’t be mentioned without speaking of his legendary moonwalk which he performed for the first time in 1983 on the “Motown 25 years” anniversary show, shooting him into the superstar genre.

Michael continued his success, winning eight Grammies in one night.

He officially went solo in 1984 and was named “Artist of the Decade” at the end of the 1980’s.

Michael performed all over the world, being the first to perform in countries that had never been visited by a pop/rock artist.

Through the years Jackson’s legacy remained but his reputation wavered.

In the late 1980’s Jackson created Neverland, a ranch in California where he housed exotic pets and had his own amusement rides. In 1993 Jackson was charged with child molestation after a 13-year-old boy claimed the star had fondled him.

Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley in 1994 and later divorced her in 1996, only to marry Debbie Rowe that same year.

Criticism of Jackson continued throughout the years, including criticism of his many facial surgeries and his skin lightening due to what he said was because of the disease vitiligo. In 2002 he received enormous criticism for dangling his son over a balcony while greeting fans in Germany which he claimed was, “out of innocence.”

Michael Jackson was set to perform in a comeback tour with 50 shows to begin July 13th. Tickets sold out in only four hours.

Art Nouveau

The architectural and artistic answer to the literary Modernist movement that began in the late 19th century was the Art Nouveau movement in Europe. The Art Nouveau movement reached its peak in the early 20th century, which is when the majority of Riga’s Art Nouveau houses were built, beginning in 1899. Riga’s term for the movement, Jugendstil, comes from the German and Scandinavian movement named after the avant-garde periodical Jugend (“Youth”). Unlike the stiffer sensibilities of Victorian style, Art Nouveau stressed a complete creative freedom, mixing fantastic elements with a tendency to show all utilitarian construction elements as artistic value, with very characteristic elements such as dynamic, undulating, and flowing lines and geometrical ornaments. In Riga, Art Nouveau could be split into two main directions, decorative and romantic-nationalistic Art Nouveau.
Riga is one of the largest centres of Art Nouveau, with more than a third of the buildings of its Central District built in the style; other significant centres include Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Vienna, Krakow, and Moscow and St. Petersburg, among others. The main street for Riga’s Art Nouveau district is Elizabetes, which intersects Brivibas Boulevard. In addition to Elizabetes Street, Alberta and Strelnieku Streets also feature impressive examples of the style. In total, there are over 800 Art Nouveau buildings in Riga, but finding them all would be quite an ambitious undertaking, so we’ll try to guide you to the most noteworthy ones.

The Beacon Theatre

  • The Beacon Theatre is the "older sister" to Radio City Music Hall. Both legendary venues were the "brainchild" of Samuel "Roxy" Rothafel, the great theatrical impresario and visionary of his time.

  • Roxy Rothafel had identical dreams for both theaters. He believed that both the Beacon Theatre and Radio City Music Hall should become an "International Music Hall" theater, to present live entertainment acts and present cultural and popular events.

  • Designed by Chicago architect Walter Ahlschlager in the Art Deco style, the Beacon Theatre opened in 1929 as a forum for vaudeville acts, musical productions, drama, opera, and movies.

  • Known for its flawless acoustics, the Beacon has been a favored New York City stop for top acts since the Roaring Twenties. Remarkably, the original sound-system still provides near-perfect acoustics today.

  • In 1979, the historic venue was designated a national landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • A 1986 proposal to convert the 2,600-seat, three-tiered theatre into a disco was blocked when a judge ruled the change would irreparably damage the building's architecture.

  • Many of the greatest names in music have played the Beacon including the Rolling Stones, Jerry Garcia, Aerosmith, Michael Jackson, James Taylor, Radiohead, and Queen.

  • The Beacon Theatre has hosted such operatic events as "Madame Butterfly" (1988) and "Ballet on Broadway" (1978).

  • The Beacon was the first "concert hall" outfitted for IMAX for the film "The Rolling Stones at the Max," December 1991.

  • His Holiness the Dalai Lama chose the Beacon Theatre as the site of his teaching classes in August of 1999.

  • The Allman Brothers hold an annual rite of spring concert series at the Beacon Theatre known as "The Beacon Run." Since 1989, they have performed 173 shows at the Beacon.

  • On Oct. 29, 2006 Bill Clinton ended his 60th birthday celebration at the Beacon with a private Rolling Stones concert.

  • In November 2006 the Beacon Theatre joined MSG Entertainment's family of world-class venues.

New 4g Iphone

This beautiful concept, inspired by the curves and tapering of the Macbook Air coupled with the touch's back, is even better than the cool Macbook-inspired iPhone 4G we featured at the beginning of the month.

The thing that excites me most about these concepts, however, is not the aesthetic aspect of it. It's the the front camera and the fact that people seem to be excited about getting videoconferencing on the iPhone. Specially about the idea of interacting with desktop videoconferencing software on both the PC and the Mac. This is a must for the videochat feature to be really useful, and personally I think it's one of the reasons it hasn't been done by Apple before.

My hope is that they are working to make it crossplatform, either with Apple releasing iChat for the PC at one point or, ideally, working on the connection with existing PC videoconferencing software like MSN and Skype.

Rumors are reported that it will release on July 17, 2009
